The news in Arkansas this morning is that the nation's medical system is "racked" by a doctor shortage. Even before the health care overhaul, the country needs 7,500 more primary-care physicians. Rural Arkansas is among the regions that has fewer than one primary-care physician for every 3,500 people. New medical-school graduates don't want to go to rural Arkansas or to the Delta, where they will work long hours, earn poor pay, etc. They want to move to an urban area and specialize in some area that will make them a lot of money and let them play golf two or three times a week.
